Now What?

I’ve wanted to start a blog for years. If you know me, you know that I have lots and lots of opinions on lots and lots of things, I love the sound of my own voice, and, contrary to the opinion of one philosophy professor in college, I think that I have a pretty strong command of the written word. I mean, my husband says that I’m a good writer, so, that’s got to count for something right? These attributes, combined with my millennial status make me the target market for a wordpress, but something has always stopped me from diving in and creating my platform.
Why the hesitation? I can say with confidence that I’m not afraid of critics; I would actually be honored to have someone read what I have to say and care enough to actually take the time to criticize it. My concern has always been what the focus of my blog would be. What topics would I write about? What would set me apart from the umteentrillion other blogs out there? When you bring it up in conversation people ask “what are you passionate about?” Well, that list is long: the obvious answer would be weddings and events (duh), then there’s décor and design (double duh), then there’s travel, style (despite my athleisure dominated wardrobe over the past year, thank you pregnancy, maternity leave, and now quarantine), food (occasionally vegan and/or gluten free, sometimes without added sugars, sometimes with allll the sugar, and then sometimes I eat foie gras so like, a balanced diet), and most recently I can add being a mom (@williamgeraldohara). How do I choose from this long list of things I love, and be passionate enough about just one topic, to create enough interesting content, with a unique enough voice, that anyone, let alone several people, would keep coming back to see what I had to say? And so I’ve always said, forget it.
Fast forward to Day 33 of what I was told would be a 15 day quarantine. I’m deep down an Instagram rabbit hole, via the story of an event planner that I’ve never met, who throws the most creative children’s parties, stalking one of her clients who, from what I can tell from precursory insta-stalking, doesn’t have any obvious business or product that she’s hawking, I’m not even sure she that she’s trying to sell herself as a lifestyle brand, although A. I haven’t visited her website yet and B. her lifestyle and annual Valentine’s Day party that she co-hosts with two daughters, is, most definitely, aspirational. But I digress, the point of the story is that she’s got a blog, and she refers to it as her “digital diary” and seeing as it does not look like there will be any events in New York City for the remainder of 2020, it appears that I’m in need of both a hobby and a creative outlet, and a “digital diary” sounds like the perfect place to start. So thanks for the inspo @sarajanemercer, both to start this blog and to fully embrace my never-ending desire to be a little extra when it comes to celebrations.
So, that was my first blog post. Now what?
